Transformation Through Time
26" x 22" Oil Painting 1953> |
I started painting when I was 3 years old. I can remember loving to
paint on my Grandmother's back porch and delighting in being called an
artist by my family. Art classes were always my favorite classes in
school. My first assignment in my first oil painting class when I was a
senior in high school, was to set up a "still life" and paint it. On
the table in front of me were various dusty bottles and waxed fruit and
I knew immediately I just couldn't do it. I sat down, hung my head and
thought "I just can't do that, what am I going to do?" I was looking
down at my red loafers and just started drawing! I was fascinated by
Dali's surrealistic paintings at the time which was the main influence
for this, my first oil painting - a 5th Dimensional approach from the
very beginning.
So... the red loafer symbolizes high school and the white sneaker,
grade school. The living tree symbolizes my growth and the dead tree
all that I found not useful and had discarded. The "river of life"
flows across the bottom of the painting, through the rough times
symbolized by the dirty big city and then up the stairs ("path") into
the light. Thirty eight years after I created this painting I saw the
head of my guardian angel in the light! (I had been drawing just her
face ever since I can remember.)
I then gave her a body - I figured she deserved that after all those years!
